As our life with Mom is winding down, we talked in the car today about the importance of her continuing to eat plant-based foods and paying attention to portion control. Mom lost more weight this last week and she is thrilled. We were on our way to Costco so that she could order her hearing aids and as we drove I asked about her plans for her meals when she was at home. She told me that Marilyn had shown her in the grocery store all the wonderful frozen vegetables that are available. They even have cubes of frozen squash. I told her about yesterdays blog post, Being Fat In America, by John Robbins. Mom went on to tell how much better she feels having cut out dairy and animal proteins.
I think for the first time in Mom’s life she is ready to go home. She has never been away from her home for 4 months. She always loved to travel and was always up for an adventure. Today, sadly, her adventures have been scaled down. She no longer goes boogie boarding with me – today is was walking into my Bainbridge Island hypnosis office without her walker. She lightly held my arm and held her head up high and walked into the building and down the hall. You could see the smile of satisfaction on her face when we returned to the car. She had walked to and from my office without her walker. I don’t think that she could have done that in December when she arrived. Mom is missing her home: my sister, her friends and her stuff. Of course she is already talking about going to the family reunion in July in Iowa – so she won’t be home for long. I love that adventurous spirit about her.
Slender For Life™ clients follow the plant-based eating recommendations of Dr. John McDougall of the McDougall’s Health and Wellness Center and Dr. Neil Barnard from the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine (PCRM). My Mom has thrived on the vegetables and whole grains and I was thrilled to see a cutie orange on the table next to her chair. She has been learning the importance of eating frequent small meals and that it is OK to leave food on her plate. And, at age 88, she now uses self-hypnosis for weight loss.
