Mom flew home on Monday so our Life With Mom has come to a close at 18 weeks. My sister and brother-in-law flew to Seattle on April 7 and the three of them flew back to Colorado Springs on Monday, April 11. The arrival of my sister really brought Mom’s leaving to a reality for Mom, Marilyn and I – all three of us were pretty sad all weekend. For Marilyn and I, not only will we miss Mom, we are scarred that she will go home and gain weight. The family members that she is now with are very overweight and sick with diseases like diabetes. And, the sad, sad truth is that they don’t care. Mom lost 17 pounds towards her goal of 20 pounds. She has worked really hard and has done so well. I almost lost it when I heard my sister tease her with apple crisp and ice cream. Needless to say, this was a weekend of using stress reduction techniques.

Please, don’t get me wrong, I love my sister and brother-in-law dearly. My brother-in-law, who I also believe should be nominated for sainthood, summed it all up. He was talking about how much his knees hurt. He is obese and never exercises and walks as little as possible. Yet, when it comes to weight loss, he says he wants to eat what he wants to eat when he wants it – so down the hatch with two fatty hamburgers – and he doesn’t care. DRIVES ME WILD – especially since I do love him.

A while back, I asked Mom if she was in it for life or if this was just a diet for her. She said then that her goal was to be Slender For Life™. Mom has learned self-hypnosis and she has my book, Becoming Slender For Life and its hypnosis CD set. Most days when she is at home, I talk to her at least twice on the phone and as appropriate I can offer her support. Ultimately, it will get down to Mom wanting to keep the weight off.

I tell all hypnosis for weight loss clients that their biggest challenge will be that it is abnormal in our culture to be at a healthy weight. 65% of your peers are overweight. How sad is that?

Sunday Mom and I took off by ourselves to drive to Silverdale so she could get a new cell phone (still don’t know why she needs one but it got us alone and away from everyone else. We chatted the entire trip and Sunday night she beat me again in Cribbage.

This concludes the end of the Wednesday Life With Mom series. I will update you from time to time on how she is doing. Thank you to all of you who have asked me about her.
