Week 9 of our life with Mom brought us some exciting news and reminded me that weight loss is not a straight line event. Last week, Mom had gained 1/2 pound at the time of her weigh-in. this week, Mom lost 5 pounds! I asked Mom what she had done differently this week, and she said that she really hadn’t made any food changes. She had been more faithful in listening to her CDs and she had been practicing self-hypnosis – but she didn’t have any idea why she was up 1/2 pound last week and down 5 pounds this week. Then I remembered what I wrote in my book, Becoming Slender For Life and what I see with weight loss hypnosis clients each week:

Remember, weight release, like most things in life, is not a straight-line event. In other words, releasing weight does not look like going from Point “A” to Point “B” in a straight line.
For most of us, it looks something like this:
When you reach your goal and look back, you see that your weight loss was really a series of ups and downs, even though it will then seem like it was a straight line release.
Our weight fluctuates throughout each day and from day to day. At times, body weight may plateau for a few days while your body makes other adjustments. It is not unusual for a client’s weight to remain the same or be down very little one week, yet at the same time be down a dress size or in a notch or two on the belt from the previous week. ~ Becoming Slender For Life, page 191.
So don’t expect to lose weight every week. I tell clients that their weekly weight is interesting information, but that I am much more interested in the monthly total – that will give me a much better idea as to how the person is doing.

It was fun watching Mom over the weekend. She acted lighter and giggled a lot- she’s down a total of 9 pounds – almost halfway to her goal! Saturday night we all went to the movie theater to watch True Grit – she loved it. It had been years since she had last been to a theater.

On Tuesday Mom fell, caught her foot and fell. Fortunately, I had stopped home for a few minutes so I was there to lift her to her feet. (Otherwise it would have been another 911 call). She was a bit sore as the day wore on, but seemed to be in pretty good shape. So Late Tuesday afternoon we headed off to Silverdale to Lowe’s to look at carpet and pain. Mom finally found a carpet that fit within the allowance of the insurance company and that she liked. She picked out colors of paint (no final decision yet – waiting on daylight). The construction crew is hoping to start painting later this week. When I realized that they are down to cleanup, paint, carpet and then move her back in, our time with Mom is too quickly heading to an end. Mom moving back home to Colorado will be a sad day for Marilyn and I.
As Mom was going to bed Tuesday night she mentioned a sore spot in her back. I quickly taught her how she could increase the pain (yes, I said increase the pain) and then easily decrease the pain so that it all but went away. The shocked look on her face when she realized she had dialed down the pain was great fun!
