Living well with dementiaLiving well with dementia is transforming a malignant life of dementia into a productive life of REMENTIA. Rementia is defined as the regaining of lost cognitive functional abilities. People living with dementia and their caregivers can benefit from hypnosis to help them to have a better quality of life. (Dan Nightingale, PhD)

Since 1998, I have been helping people with Alzheimer’s and other dementia to maintain and improve quality of life with hypnotherapy. Research shows that individuals with dementia can be hypnotized. There is an increasing body of empirical data demonstrating the important contribution hypnosis can make in improving the quality of life of individuals with dementia. Hypnosis for dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease can help people to improve concentration, relaxation, motivation, improve activities for daily living, immediate memory, memory of significant events, socialization and overall quality of life. Dementia hypnosis can help people to remember the beautiful things that happen in life.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is an illness caused when parts of someone’s brain stop working properly. We do not fully understand the causes yet.

There is no cure for dementia, which gets more common with age. Once a person has dementia they will get worse over time until the end of their life. However, people who have dementia can often have good quality of life for a number of years.

There are over 100 types, and sub-types, of dementia but it is the primary dementias that are of great concern as currently there is no cure.

The most common type of dementia is Dementia of the Alzheimer’s Type (DAT) followed by Vascular Dementia (VAD). To have both types is relatively common and is referred to as Mixed Dementia. The third most common type of dementia is Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB), or Lewy Body Type Dementia.

Whilst there is nothing we can do currently to cure dementia, there are some strategies that can be employed to reduce the risk of developing dementia and there are some psycho-social strategies that can be used to enhance the quality of life of people living with dementia and their loved ones.
