Dr. Dean Ornish wrote an excellent article in the Huffington Post on Monday about the Mediterranean Diet and cardiovascular disease. He writes that “An article just published in the New England Journal of Medicine claims that a Mediterranean diet is much more effective than a “low-fat diet” in preventing cardiovascular disease. A careful reading of the study reveals that this is simply not true.” Since my post yesterday was about the artery-clogging Paleo diet it seems appropriate to write about another unhealthy fad diet like the Mediterranean Diet.

Does a Mediterranean Diet Really Beat Low-Fat for Heart Health?
HuffPost, February 25, 2013, by Dean Ornish, M.D.: The authors might as well have concluded, “The Mediterranean diet reduced cardiovascular risk when compared to a randomized control group of patients who were asked to walk and chew gum at the same time” since they didn’t do that, either.
In summary, the most responsible conclusion should be, “We found a significant reduction in stroke in those consuming a Mediterranean diet high in omega-3 fatty acids when compared to those who were not making significant changes in their diet.”

Low-Fat for Heart Health?
I gasped when I saw that WebMD published a story titled Mediterranean Diet Good for the Heart: Study also on February 25. Had the reporter really read the study she would have seen that the comparison (control) group did not follow a low-fat diet. Or, as Dean Ornish wrote, “The Mediterranean diet reduced cardiovascular risk when compared to a randomized control group of patients who were asked to walk and chew gum at the same time.”

Thank you for sharing this article, Roger. I just read about the “secret” of the oldest woman’s longevity. This 115 yr old Japanese woman, along with thousands of other centenarians in her country, eat primarily a vegetarian diet with some fish and specifically stay away from red meat. But what do they know?!
Kelley – do you have a link for this lady? I’d love to read about her. Thank you for your comment. You know how passionate I am about weight loss and it is so sad to me to see all of these fad diets (Mediterranean, Paleo, Atkins …) marketed when what they really do is keep the yo-yo cycle in motion. The result of these fad diets is that more people than ever are fat and sick.
