Why Mental Rehearsal?
I have written previously about how to do the Mental Rehearsal step in the Becoming the Greatest Expression of You process. Today, I’m writing about WHY Mental Rehearsal is so important.
Mental Rehearsal is a step by step thought process of how you want to be the greatest expression of you during your day. It is a plan that you make in your mind so that your brain is primed and you will easily flow with the plan. Recent studies in neuroscience have shown you can change your brain just by thinking differently at any age.
Think of Mental Rehearsal as practicing for a sport or musical instrument. Actors go to rehearsals. Sports teams have practice on and off the field between games. Children practice the piano between lessons. Orchestras rehearse for upcoming performances.
When you mentally rehearse, you are practicing and preparing for being your best self. Mental Rehearsal is the process for firing and wiring new neurons so that you can create the lasting positive changes in your life that you want.
The question is, what are you mentally rehearsing?
What do you Mentally Rehearse?
What do you spend most of your time mentally rehearsing, thinking about and finally demonstrating? Are living in fear and imagining the worst? Do you Mentally Rehearse negative future fantasies?
Here is a question for you: How often do the things you fear will happen, happen? Thought so, most of the time, not very often. Your track record of awfulizing has a pretty high rate of “didn’t happen.”
Even though those negative future fantasies never happened, according to neuroscience your body responded as if they did happen. If you are thinking you are being chased by a saber-toothed tiger, your body produces the exact same fear chemicals as if you were being chased by that saber-toothed tiger. Living in a constant state of fear, stress and anxiety is hazardous to your health.
According to neuroscience, whatever you mentally attend to, is what you are and what you will become.
I like to think of Mental Rehearsal as a Master Mind process. In the 1920s and ‘30s Napoleon Hill wrote The Law of Success and Think and Grow Rich. He introduced the concept of master mind alliance.
Hill described the master mind alliance as, “The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.” He went on to write, “No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind [the master mind].”
While the Mental Rehearsal process does not include another person, you are consciously and purposefully directing your thoughts. Doing so, you are firing and wiring new neurons together. Fundamentally you are rewiring your neurology and training your body to be your best self.
The result is that your body believes you are your best self so that you can and do act accordingly.
Mental Rehearsal is the coordination of your mind and your body. Coming together in a spirit of harmony thereby creating a third, powerful force – the Master Mind.

Benefits of Mental Rehearsal
According to the functional brain scans of research subjects, people who mentally rehearsed an activity were activating their brain in the same way as if they were actually performing the endeavor. The repetitive firing of the neurons shaped and developed a cluster of neurons in a specific part of the brain, which now supported the pattern of conscious intent.
Their thoughts became mapped and plotted in the brain. The circuits strengthened and developed in the absolute same area of the brain as test subjects that physically practiced. They grew and changed their brain just by thinking. With the proper mental effort, the brain does not know the difference between mental or physical effort.
Mental Rehearsal is Powerful
Mental rehearsal is a powerful way that you can grow and mold new circuits in your brain. When you repeatedly imagine performing an action your brain circuits reorganize themselves to reflect your very intentions.
Your mind and your body coordinate as one unit working together for your success.
When should you use Mental Rehearsal?
Use Mental Rehearsal first thing every morning to set your tone and intention for the day. Create the expectation of you joyfully being your best self throughout the day.
You can also use Mental Rehearsal prior to a specific event such as a meeting, acting, music or dance performance, passing an exam, participating in a sporting event and having a difficult conversation. Mental Rehearsal should be used for healing and recovery from any illness, injury and surgery.
