Mindfulness at school has been shown to reduce the likelihood of depression-related symptoms in adolescents. Secondary school students who follow an in-class mindfulness program report reduced indications of depression, anxiety and stress up to six months later. Moreover, these students were less likely to develop pronounced depression-like symptoms. It’s been my honor to teach mindfulness hypnosis techniques to many adolescents for the past 18 years at Seattle Hypnosis with Roger Moore. Just in the past month I was stopped by a young man on the ferry who thanked me for teaching him self hypnosis for mindfulness several years ago when he was on the high school boys lacrosse team. Not only did it help him with sports and academics, he uses hypnosis for stress reduction and it helped him manage freshman year depression. Now a college senior, he says he will continue using mindfulness hypnosis several times a day, everyday throughout his life.

Mindfulness is a form of meditation therapy focused on exercising ‘attentiveness’. Depression is often rooted in a downward spiral of negative feelings and worries. Once a person learns to more quickly recognise these feelings and thoughts, he or she can intervene before depression sinks in.
Kids of most any age easily learn mindfulness hypnosis – in fact they are naturals at it. I love it when children share their self hypnosis skills with their parents and siblings – then it’s a family affair. Teaching mindfulness self hypnosis to kids and their families is one of the great joys of my profession.
