Mark Metherell and Julian Lee reported in The Sydney Morning Herald on September 2, 2009, that the nation’s children will live two years fewer than their parents unless there are urgent changes to lifestyle, government experts warn.

They are calling for a ban on TV advertising of junk food targeted at young viewers, a move at odds with the media watchdog’s views.

In a report released yesterday, the National Preventative Health Taskforce has proposed a battery of measures including higher taxes and bans to combat obesity, alcohol abuse and smoking.

The Health Minister, Nicola Roxon, would not say whether the Government would act on the junk food measure but signaled her support for higher taxes on  cigarettes.

She defended the use of ”sin taxes”, saying ”we are killing people by not acting … we have preventable cancers”.

The taskforce has called for the price of a packet of 30 cigarettes to rise to at least $20 within three years, for an investigation into tax changes on alcohol to discourage harmful drinking of cheap and strong products, and tax changes to spur the production of healthy food.

In its report, Australia: the healthiest country by 2020, the taskforce calls for urgent action to counter threats from unhealthy lifestyles which, on present trends, could cut children’s life expectancy by two years.

”It is unacceptable that we as a nation are leaving this legacy to our children and grandchildren,” the report says.

The report calls for the phasing out over four years of the advertising of energy-dense, nutrient-poor food and drink before 9pm on free-to-air and pay TV, and the phasing out of toys, celebrities and cartoon characters to promote food and drink.

It cites World Health Organization findings and the growing international consensus that food advertising influences children’s preferences, diet and health.

”Australian children’s exposure to television food advertising is among the highest in the world, and a large proportion of these advertisements are for non-core, extra energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods.”

The taskforce found that evidence of negative effects of inappropriate food advertising on children’s food preferences and consumption was ”now sufficiently compelling to recommend ameliorative action”. Read the full story:  Bad food can cut two years off a child’s lifespan.
