In a recent study published in the Journal of Applied Biobehavioral Research, college students who did not exercise on a regular basis were asked to spend eight weeks simply writing and thinking about fitness. Researchers split the students into two groups. Some were asked to list general reasons why they should exercise, while others were asked to concentrate instead on specific actions they could take, such as joining a gym or finding a workout buddy. At the end of two months, the first group showed no improvement—but the second group actually had been inspired to exercise more and, as a result, saw their fitness levels improve.
