This mornings Seatlle Post Intelligencer’s headline reads: “Overweight? Blame your ZIP code“. The article written by Jennifer Langston reports that a University of Washington study finds that the strongest predictor of obesity rates is not income or education it is property values. The issue seems to be lack of affordable fresh fruits and vegetables and the lack of areas to exercise. Neighborhoods that have well maintained sidewalks have less obesity than neighborhoods that have no side walks and are unsafe for walking.

To deal with the obesity epidemic we must do a better job of planning neighborhoods making sure that not only are there choices for fresh produce there must be safe and convenient areas for exercise. In Chapter 7 of Becoming Slender For Life I offer some tips on getting off the couch and moving your body that can be done at home.
