It is incredibly sad to me that less than half of overweight or obese kids receive long-term follow-up. And, I think that it is appalling. Childhood obesity is a national crisis that we must address. As a society, we simply cannot afford the unnecessary health care costs of obesity – especially since it is preventable. Parents must set an example of health for their children by eating healthy, buying healthy food and snacks and by exercising. Get the whole family involved in healthy plant-based meals and physical activity. Make weight loss a family affair.
For years now medical doctors have pretty much given up talking to their adult patients about weight loss. Typically, doctors prescribe the medications to combat the resulting diseases, illnesses and complications of obesity. Medical doctors are prescribing medication to lower blood sugar or blood pressure rather than focusing weight loss so that blood sugars and blood pressure could return to a healthy rate. Parents, please don’t let them do that with your children. Make weight loss a family affair and do what you can do to keep your children healthy.
Doctors Not Stressing Follow-Up Plans With Obese Kids
WebMD Health News, October 14, 2011: More than half of all overweight and obese children are not getting proper follow-up advice from their pediatricians on how they can lose weight and keep it off.
The rates of childhood obesity have more than tripled in the past 30 years. Today, 1 in 3 American kids and teens are overweight or obese. Diseases and conditions normally only seen in adults like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes are now increasingly being seen in children. Most pediatricians weigh children and talk about nutrition and exercise during office visits, but some drop the ball when it comes to developing and helping to implement a long-term follow-up plan.
Parents should ask, “When should we see you again” and “What can I do between now and then to help my child reach a healthier weight.” Parents should also ask about their child’s weight status: Are they normal, overweight, or obese?
Ask the doctor to explain where they are on the growth chart and what they need to do to reach a healthier weight. You do have to treat obesity like a chronic illness; you can’t see kids once and cure them. Children who are overweight or obese and have other conditions associated with obesity should be seen again in three to six months.
In the meantime, they should follow the 5-2-1-0 rule. This means five fruits and vegetables a day, two hours or less of screen time such as TV or video games a day, one hour of physical activity a day, and zero or very little sugar-sweetened beverages per day.

Children can safely and healthfully lose weight when the family in involved and Mom & Dad set the example. Mom and dad, fill your house with healthy plant-based meals and snacks. Get out side with your family and be active. Let your children know that their health is most important. Ask your doctor about your child’s weight.
