A frequent question is my offices is, “If you’re powered by plants, where do you get your protein?” My stock response is, “Do you have a protein deficiency?” And my next question is, “Who do you know that has a protein deficiency?” In the past 19 years, I have never had anyone tell me that a medical doctor has told them that they have a protein deficiency. And no one has ever known someone who does have a protein deficiency. Unless you have a medical condition, the fact is that as long as you are consuming enough calories, it is physically impossible to have a protein deficiency eating whole grains, vegetables and fruit. If you are living a whole food plant-based lifestyle you are consuming enough protein – even if you are a body builder or extreme athlete.
I mentioned yesterday that I’ve started reading an excellent book by Garth Davis, M.D., titled, Proteinaholic. Dr. Davis writes, “After years of intense research, I could come to only one conclusion: People whose diets are high in animal protein have significantly higher rates of chronic diseases: hypertension, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and many, many others, including cataracts, diverticulitis, diverticulosis, inflammatory bowel disease, gall bladder disorders, gout, hypertension, irritable bowel syndrome, kidney stones, and rheumatoid arthritis. Study after study kept turning up the same types of correlations between animal protein, saturated fat, obesity, and chronic illness. When scientists compared people who ate meat with people who didn’t, the meat eaters were heavier, sicker, and more likely to die sooner.”

Frank Medrano: Powered by Plants
Forks Over Knives, By Amanda Just:
And his strength comes from plants. That’s right: Frank Medrano is vegan.
Frank, like most people, wasn’t born vegan. He ate meat for 30 years. And though he’s been training for 7 years now, it was a little over a year ago when he learned that two good friends of his, Dan Attanasio and Noel Polanco, were vegan. They were body builders, too, and Frank was intrigued. His two friends helped him get started with a plant-based diet, helped him make meal plans and answered all of his questions, and within 2-3 months, Frank was feeling all the amazing benefits of a plant-based diet. The most notable were the increase in energy – “real high energy” – and quicker recovery times. He calls the benefits of a plant-based diet “super wellness.”
“I thought I was healthy and strong before, but [after adopting a plant-based diet] I started to feel energetic and I was having quicker recovery after training,” Frank said.
