Protein Intake After Age 65

People frequently ask me if they need more protein intake after the age of 65. For almost all Americans, the last thing you need to worry about is protein intake. If you eat your total daily calorie requirement in potato chips you will have more than enough protein. Lack of protein is rarely the issue – it’s almost always excess protein.

People that eat very high protein diets have a higher risk of kidney stones. A high protein intake has also been shown to accelerate kidney damage in people who have kidney disease and can affect the heart, liver, spleen, nervous system, stomach or intestines. The reality is the body does not store protein and to process the excess protein in the Standard American Diet (SAD) is harmful to your kidneys.

Sadly, in the meat and dairy council have marketed fats like beef, pork, fish, chicken and dairy as protein. Protein is a nutrient, not a food group. When someone tells me that they have a protein with a meal, I know that they mean chicken, fish, beef or pork, but I respond with, “Oh, you have peas, lettuce, apples, beans, rice or oatmeal?”

A wholefood, plant-based lifestyle has been proven for more than 100 years to be the healthiest way to eat. Plant-based proteins are complete proteins and will help you to obtain and maintain your healthy ideal weight.

If you are ready to end your desires for the foods that make you sick and fat and want to create healthy desires for the foods that make you healthy and slender, let’s talk.

“Is there anything we can do, diet-wise, to protect our aging muscles? Vegetables. Consuming recommended levels of vegetables was associated with cutting the odds basically in half of low muscle mass. Why? The alkalizing effects of vegetables may neutralize the mild metabolic acidosis that occurs with age, and, you know, it may be that little extra acid in our body that facilitates the breakdown of muscle.

So, if we are going to increase our protein consumption after age 65, it would be preferable to be plant-based proteins to protect us from frailty. No matter how old we are, a diet that emphasizes plant-based nutrition is likely to maximize health benefits in all age groups.”
