Protein is a nutrient
Protein is a nutrient – not a food group. I was having a discussion with another professional this week who kept to referring to protein as if it were a food group. It’s not! Protein is a nutrient!!!!
It drives me crazy when people talk about protein as if it were one of the food groups. Several times I asked for clarification when she kept referring to protein. “Oat meal?” I asked. Another time I asked, “now when you refer to protein you are talking peas, potatoes, spinach, beans and cantaloupe?” I could tell I was frustrating her and driving her crazy. The sad part to me is that she had no idea that these foods have protein. She has been brainwashed by the meat and dairy industries that protein had to be beef, chick, fish, pork, eggs and dairy.
Please hear me. If you are consuming enough calories in your day, you are consuming enough protein. If you ate your total daily calories only in potato chips you will consume enough protein (NO – I AM NOT RECOMMENDING THAT YOU EAT POTATO CHIPS!)
The problem is not lack of protein -the problem is too much protein! True protein deficiency, in the absence of inadequate calories or a junk-food diet which has more serious problems than a lack of protein, is virtually non-existent.
This colleague was telling me that the reason our common client is hungry is that she wasn’t eating enough protein. The problem is that she wanted the client to eat animal protein. But, animal proteins have NO fiber. Chicken will not satiate you. Instead of talking about protein, this coach should be talking about starch. It is starch that will allow the client to feel satiated and satisfied and put an end to her hunger.

Protein ~ Power Up With Plant-Based Protein
“Protein—an important nutrient that helps build, maintain, and repair body tissue—is widely available in beans, vegetables, and grains. Protein deficiency is almost unheard of in the United States. It’s easy to get all the protein you need without eating meat, dairy, or eggs.
An average woman needs about 46 grams of protein per day; the average man about 56. But most Americans consume about double the amount they actually need.
And when it comes to protein, more isn’t always better. One study found that people eating large amounts of animal protein have 23 times the risk of death from diabetes and 5 times the risk of death from cancer as those consuming less protein. Foods rich in animal protein are often packed with saturated fat and cholesterol.”
