Search for chaos
A client once talked to me about his search for chaos. What he said was that he searched for chaos to feel alive. If he wasn’t experiencing chaos, he felt nothing. He flatlined.
As I listened and as I have thought about this declaration over the past several months I have become aware of just how prevalent behavior really is.
My observation is that as humans we do want to feel alive. We want to know that we are alive. Sadly, this phenomenon can manifest through suffering.
For many people, if they are not feeling suffering, they are not feeling anything. They are flatlined. As miserable as stress, anxiety and other physical, mental and emotional pain are, at least you know that you are alive.
So, here are questions for you to ponder: Are you addicted to suffering? If it were not for suffering, what would you feel. Do you allow yourself to feel love and joy?
Don’t get me wrong, anger, hurt, fear and sadness are normal, natural and even healthy human emotions when experienced in the appropriate moment. But, is that all you feel? Are you stuck in the past reliving old thoughts and emotions?
