94-year-old fitness guru and vegetarian Jack LaLanne says exercise and diet are the king and queen of good health. How much exercise do you need?  According to guidelines set by the US government, 90 minutes a day.

Why 90 minutes? Because most people eat the fat, salt and sugar-enhanced Standard American Diet, and in order to compensate for all those unneeded, unhealthy calories, you have to burn baby burn.

Dr. Jay Gordon, MD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, UCLA Medical School says: “Exercise changes everything. It changes brain chemistry, it changes the way that you digest and metabolize food. It changes the way you feel.”

Dr. Gordon tells his patients that they need to get 2 hours of exercise every day. He says that wen you get into your 40’s and 50′ you can do a lot more with the other 22 hours of the day than you could with the 24 without exercise. If you want happy, healthy children, get them a couple of hours of exercise each day.

Yes it is effort to get exercise, but it is worth it. Kids who exercise are happier, healthier and do better in school.

There are no magic answers. It involves lifestyle changes.

Dr. Gordon talks about his success working with kids who have been labeled ADHD. When given a dairy free and sugar free diet with a couple of hours of exercise everyday, kids can come off their medication or not go on their medication.

Dr. Gordon recommends for childhood obesity that kids change the way they are eating and that they exercise.

I have family members my age that can’t walk two blocks due to poor eating and no exercise. They can’t believe that at my age I climb Mt. Rainier, run marathons and go on 100 mile bike rides. Theses same family members are amazed by my strength and endurance when it comes to moving furniture and packing boxes.
