On Saturday, June 6, 2009, I got up at 4:30 AM, had my oatmeal, finished last minute preparations and picked up my friend Stu by 6:00 AM. We headed west across the new Hood Canal Bridge and on past Port Angeles to the Elwa River. Along the way we settled on hiking Appleton Pass in the Olympic National Forest. We hesitated for a moment once we were on the Olympic Peninsula when we encountered rain, but a few miles further, the road was dry.
We reached the trail head and was ready to set out by 9:00 AM. Neither of us had ever been on this hike which made it all that much more adventuresome. Because of heavy flooding over the years, the last 2 miles of the road had been washed out along with many of the foot bridges across the mountain streams and rivers.
We walked on rocks and logs to cross the streams and rivers several times, even when we reached the snow fields. We had to be on the look out for the trail – some of it was gone and some of it was buried in snow. The journey was interesting and beautiful. Spring flowers in bloom, many waterfalls, huge trees recently had fallen combined with great friendship and conversation kept our minds occupied as time flew by.
When we reached this huge snow field in the video, we totally lost the trail. We could see that we were close to the summit of Appleton Pass but were unsure how we could safely reach it. It was 1:00 and we made the decision that we had gone as far as were going to that day. We sat on a log in the sun, wearing shorts and surrounded in snow. According to the map, we were at 5100 feet in elevation.
At 2:00 PM we headed back down the mountain, across the snow and streams and back to my truck by 5:00. Getting my boots and socks off and dangling my bare feet off the tailgate felt so good! By 6:00 PM we were in Port Angeles and stopped at Bella Italia (heads up Twilight fans – this is where Edward took Bella on their first date) for great pasta.
Then it was home and into a nice hot shower by 8:30 PM. What a great day!
14 years ago I couldn’t have done this. I weighed 110 pounds more than I do now. There is no way that I could have hiked 15 miles round trip, balanced on log bridges across roaring rivers, walked on stones to cross rushing mountain streams and hiked up to 5100 feet elevation and back down. I could not have done it.
Today, thanks to weight loss hypnosis, healthy eating and exercise, I have liberty in my life. I no-longer have to consider if I am in good enough physical shape to go backpacking up a mountain or to even climb Mount Rainier. I can get on my bike and go for a 100 mile bike ride. I can walk easily from Battery Park in lower Manhattan to Central Park easily hitting Tribeca, Little Italy, Soho, Greenwich, East Village, Chelsea, Midtown and others along the way. I continue to use the Light Switch self-hypnosis several times a day, every day.
