It is estimated that 80% of obese adults have at least one or more health concerns, such as: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver disease, osteoarthritis, gall stones, sleep apnea and certain cancers. For most children and adults, obesity is avertable and the health consequences are reversible with diet change, weight loss and exercise. As a nation, we cannot afford this needless health care crisis.
There have been some exciting recent developments in curbing the obesity crisis. Jamie Oliver and his Food Revolution have
brought the childhood obesity epidemic and the outrageous school lunch program to prime time television. The result is that people are beginning to talk about this and similar food revolutions are brewing in communities across America.
The Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine (PCRM) has advocated a Healthy School Meals Act. In 2010 Congress passed a school lunch reform bill, but unfortunately it’s not nearly extensive enough and is sorely underfunded. On a brighter note, First Lady Michelle Obama has initiated the Let’s Move program to get our kids up and moving. Study after study shows that children who are physically active do better academically. Our nation is falling behind many countries in educating our children and providing for their health, and obesity is at the dead center of the reasons why.
