If middle schooler Willie can figure out how to solve the obesity crisis, why are our schools teaching poor nutrition and providing school lunches that make our kids fat and sick? What you eat really does matter. That’s why I have studied nutrition and weight loss for the past 17 years and why I felt it important for me to complete Dr. John McDougall’s Starch Solution Certification course. A major component of this course was learning the Starch Solution for preventing and treating common diseases. Almost daily new research is released documenting the impact that the food we eat has on health and disease. For the most part, the research also supports a plant based diet of whole grains (starches) vegetables and fruit. I am honored to be able to offer the Starch Solution in Seattle and will soon be holding Starch Solution classes in Seattle, Bainbridge Island and on-line.
Cow’s milk is a leading cause of obesity and illness among Westerners and is sadly still promoted to children and their families as a health food. In the January 2011 report “School Meals: Building Blocks for Healthy Children,” the USDA Committee on Nutrition Standards for National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs recommended a reduction in low-fat milk intake, especially in overweight children. Yet vouchers through the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program specifically exclude potatoes. How sad and insane is that?!! Even Willie can figure that out.
