Have you ever eaten a meal and then realized you never tasted it? If you nuked it in a microwave from a cardboard box, maybe that’s not such a bad thing. However, if it’s a real meal that you or someone else has prepared, you might be missing out on something good!

Eating mindfully means that you give yourself the opportunity to truly taste food and become satiated physically, emotionally and psychologically.

One reason many of us have difficulty with mindful eating is because of our anxiety, which can translate into inhaling food as opposed to truly tasting it.

What follows are 10 simple steps for mindful eating. Some of what appears below may seem obvious while other points will cause you to pause and reflect. Read them all in order to fully absorb their deeper meaning.

  1. Look at your food
  2. Smell the aroma
  3. Put the food on the tip of your tongue and lips
  4. Put the food in your mouth but don’t bite right away
  5. Chew slowly and deliberately
  6. Swallow and fee
  7. Drink water
  8. Allow negative thoughts to pass
  9. Stay seated at the table for at least 20 minutes
  10. Include gratitude after meal

When you eat from now on, you eat consciously, first noticing what you are thinking and what you are feeling and ask yourself if you are eating for emotional comfort or if you are truly physically hungry. When you do eat, you sit at a kitchen or dining room table or other designated eating area with the TV off. You always sit when you eat. You avoid eating at your desk, on the coffee table, at the stove, standing over the kitchen counter or sink, in the car or while walking down the street, or through the mall. You take the time to honor the food on your plate, blessing the food and all those involved in its growth and preparation. Notice the shapes of food, its color and the scratches on the plate. Noticing the fork, knife, spoon or other eating utensil in your hand. Feeling its hardness, its warmth or coolness. Noticing the movement in your arm as you lift the food to your mouth. Inhaling its aroma mindfully. Consciously, tasting this food, honoring its various textures and how they change with mastication. Consciously eating. Making each bite an event.
