But, you do have a choice to use these stress management tools and choose how you respond to the stressors. Stop worrying is this weeks reading from my book, Becoming Slender For Life.

Stop worrying

This common behavior can easily lead to mindless eating. You can probably recall worrying about an upcoming event and watching your fears dissolve once it was over. Worry over a future event is sometimes called anticipatory anxiety. The uncertainty of the outcome can create all sorts of fears as well as a negative future fantasy. This type of anxiety can also cause insomnia. It can even escalate into a full-fledged feeling of panic.

Solution for mindless eating:

The good news is, you can release this kind of anxiety in just a few moments using the following exercise in mental imagery.

Close your eyes and visualize the following:

1. Imagine that all your past memories exist on a timeline extending outside your body. The direction in which your past originates is best determined by asking yourself: In what direction is my past? (Your answer is intuitive.) Or, the name of my first grade teacher is_____. Notice the direction the thoughts come from. Or it may help to visualize a row of numbers representing each year of your life and just notice whether the row begins on the left or the right, above or below.

2. Now ask yourself: In what direction is my Future? Or try imagining your 100th birthday celebration and notice from what direction that picture comes.

3. Next, imagine the successful completion of the event that is causing you the anxiety. Imagine the best possible outcome that is for the highest good of all concerned. Be right there in this scene looking through your own eyes. Engage all your senses to really experience this event. Notice the last thing that has to happen so that you know this event is successful. Then, step out of this scene so that it becomes like a snapshot of the successful completion of the event.

4. Now imagine floating up out of your body so high above the timeline of your life so that your timeline is only an inch long.

5. Then float into the future to the event you’re worrying about.

6. Release the photo of the successful completion of the event down into your timeline.

7. Now float fifteen minutes further into the future past the event and float down into your timeline and face toward the present time.

8. Notice how everything between the present and the future event aligns itself to support the successful completion of this event. Notice that you feel no anxiety.

9. Return back to the present. You have just created a positive future fantasy.
