OK – Here it is, I promised that I would write on subliminal hypnosis and how it is used in subliminal advertising. So let’s start with these premises: 1) We are always in trance and my definition of hypnotherapy is taking control of the trance that you are in, and 2) All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. No one can hypnotize you without your will. Even in my Seattle hypnosis office someone can come in for stop smoking hypnosis and yet not really want to quit, then hypnotherapy will not work. You are always in control. Now, maybe you have heard of conversational hypnosis, instant hypnosis and street hypnosis, these are different than subliminal hypnosis so I’ll save those for another day.
Subliminal advertising is hidden messages that are embedded into ads and are deemed as a deceptive business practice by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). There can be no “hidden messages” in ads that cannot be seen with the eye or heard with the ear. But, subliminal advertising is still used. Did you ever notice the Ford logo in a TV show? Or, how about the can of Coke? And there is of course that unmistakable apple logo. It’s hard to find a TV show or movie that doesn’t display someone’s products.
You will also experience subliminal advertising walking through the mall and there is the smell of Cinnabon being pumped into the mall or the scent of McDonald’s french fries which are specially formulated for that distinctive aroma. And then there is feel. We have the perception that if something is heavier it must be better quality. So, manufactures add useless metal to items such as TV remote controls because consumers believe they are sturdy and more substantial.
French perfume is more glamorous than a Milwaukee perfume. A struggling perfume company once listed Milwaukee on it’s label. It had an office in Paris and switched the label to read Paris instead of Milwaukee and sales shot up instantly.
And did you know that music makes you buy? Retailers know that music that has a tempo faster than the human heartbeat causes shoppers to shop quickly and buy less. The slower the beat, the more time shoppers will take and the greater the chance they will buy.
We are also influenced by tradition – by ritual. The more stressed-out people are over the financial crisis and other life problems, the more they unconsciously adhere to familiar comforting rituals. Marketers take full advantage of this human behavior.
We move from one trance to another trance. Hypnosis is taking control of the trance you are in. In spite of of these subliminal marketing techniques, you still are the one in control – you still have the power of choice. Even when you are walking through the mall and you smell that Cinnabon and it brings you back to a childhood memory of unconditional love and acceptance. You can experience the love and acceptance of the memory without the fat and calories. It is up to you. No one can make you do something you do not want to do. You can use self-hypnosis and be in control of you. You can remain conscious and make rational, conscious purchasing decisions. Watch Light Switch Self Hypnosis and find out how easy self hypnosis is.
