Sugar sweetened beverages and childhood obesity
By now I thought that parents would understand the link between sugar sweetened beverages and childhood obesity. I live in a highly educated affluent area. Sadly, I see young children drinking Gatorade, sodas and other added sugar beverages.
I remember what it was like to grow up as an overweight child and it appalls and saddens me to see so many of our children that are overweight or obese. Here in Washington State, More than 23% of children are obese.
Today, children have diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and other illnesses once thought to only occur in adults.
Childhood obesity is preventable and reversible. We can change this! We owe it to our children.

Children’s Weight Gain Nearly 50% Higher with Sugar-Sweetened Beverages
We have all heard about the obesity risks associated with added sugar in our diets. With early childhood obesity now reaching near epidemic proportions, it’s no surprise sugary drinks for kids are getting even more bad press. A study by researchers at the University of Virginia and Columbia University, published last month in the journal Pediatrics, shows kids’ weight gain is nearly 50% higher when they get their sugar fix from such beverages.
Sugar-Sweetened Beverages and Weight Gain in 2- to 5-Year-Old Children
“CONCLUSIONS: Similar to what is seen among older children, children aged 2 to 5 years drinking SSB demonstrate both prospective and cross-sectional correlations with higher BMI z score. Pediatricians and parents should discourage SSB consumption to help avoid potential unhealthy weight gain in young children. From a public health standpoint, strong consideration should be made toward policy changes leading to decreases in SSB consumption among children.”
