Are you feeling tired, stressed out and that you need a break? Mindfulness can help you ease the stress and be more energized and happier. Mindfulness is the non-judgmental attentiveness to and awareness of the present moment. It involves being aware of your inner thoughts and feelings and external events, without evaluating or analyzing them. I teach mindfulness hypnosis to Seattle hypnosis and Bainbridge Island hypnosis clients so that you can observe a situation objectively without attaching meaning to it which reduces feelings of stress.

Tired, stressed out, need a break? Recognize it but don’t react

According to the World Health Organization, the cost of stress to American businesses is as high as $300 billion. Putting on a brave face doesn’t help. Research has shown that employees whose job requires them to manage their emotions (which, surely, is everyone) are more prone to emotional exhaustion and lower job satisfaction.

According to psychologists, when you’re dealing with repercussions from the latest head-office mistake, outwardly calm and cheerful but inwardly seething, you’re depleting your mental and emotional resources. When you get home, your self-control is so exhausted that you kick the cat or reach for the cookie jar. This so-called emotional labor has been linked to burnout. So what’s the alternative? Thrashing out to let colleagues know exactly how you’re feeling won’t do your reputation any good. Luckily, recent research has shown that a third coping technique – mindfulness – can make you less emotionally exhausted and happier at work.

Researchers in Germany randomly assigned participants to a mindfulness intervention group or a control group. Those in the mindfulness intervention group participated in mindfulness meditation and daily exercises designed to cultivate an accepting, non-judgmental attitude to momentary experiences. Both groups completed diaries for 10 days. At the end of the study, those who’d practiced mindfulness reported significantly less emotional exhaustion and higher job satisfaction; no mean feat after just 10 days.

Proponents of mindfulness argue that observing a situation objectively without attaching meaning to it reduces feelings of stress. When it comes to emotional labor, mindfulness promotes accepting and recognizing negative emotions instead of repressing them, which puts less strain on our emotional resources and preserves vitality.
