Do you understand why you
eat what you eat?

Now it’s time to address the two biggest challenges most overweight people face: eating for purely emotional reasons and eating as a reaction to stress. Both are major causes of obesity. You may find yourself eating when you’re not physically hungry, as a reaction to feeling upset, sad, lonely, angry or fearful. In addition, stress eaters often eat when they’re bored.

When you feel a negative emotion that you would describe as sadness, anger, fear, shame, guilt or hurt, you are probably experiencing a physical feeling of tension or anxiety. These feelings can be TRIGGERS that initiate your conditioned response to eat. Almost everyone does this to some extent. Many of us have been programmed since we were babies to associate love, comfort and security with food and eating. If this habit is extreme enough to affect your weight, the techniques in this chapter can facilitate your change.

Normal reactive emotions can be controlled and modified through self-education, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, counseling or even medications in certain cases. If negative emotions are severely compromising your quality of life, you should discuss the problem with your hypnotherapist or other mental health professional. It is imperative, however, that you also allow yourself to feel your emotions—all of them—in a healthy way. It’s okay to be angry, sad, frightened, joyful, powerful and loving. Remember: stuffing your emotions often equals stuffing yourself with poor food choices, becoming over-stuffed by eating too much. A good visual reminder of this bloated feeling is Poppin’ Fresh (aka the Pillsbury Doughboy), who really doesn’t have anything to giggle about.
