There are 3 main NLP and hypnosis techniques that I teach clients to interrupt negative mental chatter.

  1. Cartoon character. Create one of your negative mental chatters in your mind. Maybe it’s I’m not good enough. Get the chatter running in your mind. Listen to the tone and words. Is in your voice or someone else? Keep it going and now turn it into a cartoon character. Maybe its Daffy Duck, Olive Oil, Porky Pig or Teletubbies – makes no difference – just use the same word and intensity only have it in the cartoon characters voice. Now, what do you notice? What happened to it? Did it become comical? What happened to the power us it? Is it now comical?
  2. Bring the chatter back and run it again in the original voice and tone. Now this time have the chatter come from your big toe. Again, what happens to the power of it?
  3. One last time, bring the chatter back in the original voice and tone. Shrink it down to a postage stamp and if you are right handed, put it in the far left hand corner of the room on the floor and have it talk to you from over there. (If you are left handed put it in the far right hand corner on the floor.) Again, what happens to the power of it – is it gone?

All three of these are very powerful techniques for interrupting the hypnotic trance of the negative chatter.

Now that you have interrupted the chatter, what is the opposite message of this chatter? If it had a positive message, what would it be?

I consider the negative chatter to be like my alarm clock. It is loud, it is noisy and it gets my attention. For years my life was run by Not good enough, Roger. To this day, there is not a day that goes by without me hearing not good enough, Roger. But, instead of it being the old anchor that held me back, it is now the alarm clock. It is the call to action. It’s no longer the  enemy – it is now my friend. It’s telling me to stop cruising. It’s telling me to show up and be my best.
