The ancient Greek elite had the resources and leisure to enable over-eating, but by and large they had little tolerance for it. Hippocrates, known as the father of Western medicine warned that “sudden death is more common in those who are naturally fat than in the lean.” He advised “obese people with laxity of muscle and red complexion to take their meals after exertion and while still panting from fatigue and with not other refreshment before meals except wine, diluted and slightly cold. They should, moreover,  eat only once a day and take no baths and sleep on a hard bed and walk naked as long as possible.”

I don’t know about you, but I sure would struggle with the no bath part of that diet–  I like my bath! When I think about some of the crazy pop diets today – they really aren’t much different than what Hippocrates prescribed. Walking naked as long as possible makes about as much sense as thinking that animal fat is healthier than brown rice – that eating animal protein is healthier than complex carbohydrates.
