I am constantly asked about how much water should one drink for health and for weight loss. The research is confusing – you will see studies showing you need lots of water and studies that say you need very little. I tell clients that 64 ounces of water a day makes sense to me – more if you are drinking caffeine. Another measure that you can use is 1/2 ounce of water per pound of body weight.
Water is important with weight loss, not only do you feel full, but when you burn fat, toxins are left in your body and water efficiently flushes out these toxins. Water also reduces constipation.
There is a lot of mixed information out there about the importance of water. Recent studies have said not to worry – you are getting enough and many other studies would tell you that the chances are that you are dehydrated right now – in fact it’s about a 75% chance that you are dehydrated right now.
60% to 70% of your body weight is water and of all the nutrients that we need, water is the most important. When you don’t consume enough water, virtually every function that your body performs is put at risk.
Oprah’s Bob Greene in his book, Get With the Program! says that the benefits of drinking water are:
• Your metabolism functions better when you’re fully hydrated.
• Your digestion is improved when you drink enough water.
• Water fills you up.
• When you’re dehydrated, you eat more.
• Your exercise is much more effective if you’re fully hydrated.
• The more active you are, the fitter you become and the more water you need.
Here’s what I have observed over the years with weight loss clients: Those who consistently drink 64 ounces of water tend to lose weight easier than those who don’t.
So, drink at least 8 eight-ounce glasses of water each day. Coffee, soda, sparkling water do not count. Keep water with you at all times. Have a bottle of water on your desk, next to your chair in the TV room, in your car. Carry water with you when you go for a walk or you are out working in the yard. (I must admit that I often have to wander around the yard looking for where I last left my water bottle).

You are so right, Roger…I go by the “half your weight in ounces” rule, and while it means I am drinking water ALL the time, it has really helped me release 91 pounds so far. The other day I was traveling and didn’t have enough water with me. When I got home I drank 4 full glasses all at once because I was THAT thirsty!
I do not usually post to someone’s blog but I enjoyed this post so I felt forced to do so. Straying in a slightly different direction from the subject somewhat, what is your opinion regarding walking? It is generally being put forward as the best exercise to burn fat.
I am for all movement and walking is great. I encourage people to start small and gradually add to what they are doing. If you can walk 15 minutes then make it 16 or 17 minutes. And after a week, make it 18 or 19 minutes. Be smart and build gradually.
Nice post buddy, couldn’t agree more. Weight loss is all about three simple things, mindset, diet and exercise
