Overweight Moms Miscarriage More Often

Overweight and thinking about becoming pregnant? Pregnancy loss is  67% higher for overweight women. To lower your risk of miscarriage later, lower your weight now. New research suggests entering pregnancy with extra pounds increases your chances of miscarriage by 67%. Add this to a long list of reproductive risks posed by excess weight, including infertility, gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, contraceptive failure, congenital malformations, and increased odds that offspring will become obese.

British researchers found  that a 5′4″ woman weighing 145 lbs. (prior to pregnancy) would be two-thirds more likely to miscarry than a woman who weighed 15 lbs. less.

Beyond maintaining a healthy weight, there are other dietary measures women can take to protect their unborn children. Fruit and vegetable consumption can lower a woman’s chances of giving birth to a child with leukemia. Adequate copper intake — from sources such as shiitake mushrooms, cashews and soybeans — lower the risk of premature births. Folate-rich foods — like beans, spinach, broccoli, and Romaine lettuce — can help prevent neural tube defects, as do sources of betaine (beets, spinach) and choline (broccoli, Navy beans). According to exciting research from the University of North Carolina, choline-rich foods may even help boost your baby’s brainpower.
