The Mediterranean Diet, widely reported to be a model of healthy eating, is rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, cereals, fish, nuts, olive oil, and a moderate intake of red wine during meals, but is low in red meat, dairy products, and alcohol. 

According to a recent study released in Florence, Italy, on September 12, 2008, people who kept to a full Mediterranean Diet had lower overall mortality as well as lower mortality from several major chronic diseases. Greater adherence to the diet was associated with a 9% lower overall mortality, a 9% lower cardiovascular mortality, a 6% lower incidence of or mortality from cancer, and a 13% lower incidence of Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, Francesco Sofi, M.D., of the University of Florence, and colleagues reported online in the British Medical Journal.

Many people believe that the olive oil in the Mediterranean Diet is part of what makes it healthy. Wrong! The diet is healthier than the standard American diet because it contains more fruits and vegetables, period. Substituting olive oil for the fats found in most American diets is healthier, but if your object is to avoid heart disease, avoid olive oil.

Believe it or not, your body makes almost all the fats it needs! Two exceptions: linoleic and alphalinoleic fatty acids, amply sourced by a variety of plant foods. Therefore, it serves no purpose whatsoever to add more fat to the ready-made fat. Olive oil is a highly concentrated, refined fat that comes without any nutrition. All added oils, even olive oil, offer one thing: calories. Those calories come with a fat price tag – more fat added to your body!
