Has this happened to you? You get started on a goal and you almost achieve it and when you get close you get busy with other things and then never finish the goal? I even hear about this from people who have remodeling projects that they are doing in their own homes – that last bit of trim just never gets finished.

Here is how it goes with weight loss: Let’s say that someone has 200 pounds to let go of. They do really well and release 150 pounds. For the first time in years they can walk up a flight of stairs without having to stop and rest, they can sit on the floor and play with the grandkids and get back up, they can bend over and tie their shoes. They get busy with some work issue and they feel so great that they quit – still 50 pounds over weight. So it is important to keep the motivation for that compelling reason for letting go of the weight strong – even as the need to lose weight diminishes. But even 4 pounds is important!

A new study reported by PubMed had this to say about losing just 4 pounds: Dropping a mere 4 pounds could cut hypertension risk by 8 percent in middle-aged people and by 11 percent in the 50-plus set. Losing 15 pounds reduced high blood pressure risk by 21 percent in the middle-aged folks. People 50 to 65 who were 15 pounds thinner enjoyed an even more impressive 29 percent risk reduction. One thing that I urge all Slender For Life™ clients to do is list out 52 Reasons for being at their goal weight –  things like: look better, feel better, able to dance in my 80’s, take my grandkids to Disneyland … Then post one of those reasons on your bathroom mirror (or somewhere where you will see it) each week as your motivation for letting go of 2 or more pounds that week.
