Dr. John McDougall shares about his experience working as a plantation doctor on the Big Island of Hawaii. The plantation workers came from Japan, China and the Philippines. They brought with them to the Big Island their native diet of rice and vegetables and continued eating the healthy foods of their homeland. The children of these workers learned more about the American diet and the workers grandkids were fully Americanized in their eating habits. Dr. McDougall had the opportunity to observe the three generations.
The first generation was always trim. They had no breast cancer, prostrate cancer, colon cancer, diabetes, or heart disease. They were active into their 80’s and 90’s. The second generation gave up some of the starch and vegetable eating and began eating the richer, fatter animal products and got fatter and sicker. The grandkids were as fat and as sick as anybody Dr. McDougall had ever taken care of.
From this experience Dr. McDougall learned that the healthiest people ate a diet centered on starch. He also learned that it wasn’t inevitable that as you get older you get fatter and sicker. The first generation plantation workers maintained their health and activity into old age because of their diet. You really can take control of your health destiny.
