Study finds Americans sacrifice exercise time for food-prep time

HealthDay News, April 12, 2013: Preparing meals can mean less time for exercise, according to a new study.

Researchers analyzed U.S. Census data from more than 112,000 American adults and found that a 10-minute increase in meal preparation was associated with a lower likelihood of exercising for 10 more minutes.

The finding was true for men and women, single and married people, and those with and without children, according to the Ohio State University researchers.

They said their findings suggest that one healthy behavior can take time away from another healthy habit, and that public health recommendations need to take into account the time people have for beneficial lifestyle habits on a given day.

Overall, men and women spent an average of less than an hour on both meal preparation and exercise on the same day.

I get it. My day is very full. I get up at 4:30 and it’s usually 11:00 PM before I get to bed. I work out, I eat healthy, I work, I ride my bike, spend time with my family, talk with friends and I am involved in my community. And, my to do pile on my desk is deep. So finding ways of making it all work are important to me.

I share with all of my  Seattle weight loss hypnosis and Bainbridge Island weight loss hypnosis clients that we prepare a very healthy meal in 45 – 60 minutes over the weekend. We often double or triple the recipe so that we can eat it 4 or 5 meals each week. Neither of us want to come home at night and spend much time on meal prep. When we get home for the day we can spend just a few minutes to fix our meal. Left overs are OK and often actually taste better over time as the flavors marinate.

I’m a gym person and I do love to ride my bike. I get up at 4:30 and I am out the door by 5:00 AM to go work out. I carve out time as I can on weekends to get in a bike ride. I schedule my day so that I can walk the mile each way from the ferry to my Seattle hypnosis office. My exercise schedule probably won’t work for you or perhaps even interest you. But, I do believe that you can find the time to fix a healthy meal and be more active. Maybe, exercise for you looks like taking the stairs at work rather than the elevator.
