You still have a pulse

If you are reading this, you still have a pulse – you are human. Being human means that you have a shadow side. Being the Greatest Expression of You means embracing your shadow side.

In his book The Heart Aroused, the poet David Whyte tells us that we don’t get to just love the part of someone or ourselves that is in the light. We must also embrace the part that is in the shadow. Yes, you get to embrace your dark side.

Being the Greatest Expression of You does not mean a Pollyanna denial of human experiences of anger, hurt, fear and sadness. And, it certainly does not mean beating yourself up or shoulding on yourself when you judge yourself as less than your Best Self.

David Whyte also wrote an essay, “Shadow” in which he says, “To live with our shadow is to understand how human beings live at a frontier between light and dark and to approach the central difficulty: that there is no possibility of a lighted perfection in this life; that the attempt to create it is often the attempt to be held unaccountable, to be the exception, to be the one who does not have to be present or participate, and therefore does not have to hurt or get hurt.”

Live with your shadow

Being the Greatest Expression of You means that you live with and embrace your shadow. As a human, you do experience anger, hurt, fear and sadness. These are normal, natural and healthy human emotions.

“Even the most beneficial presence casts a shadow,” writes White. “Mythologically, having no shadow means being of another world, not being fully human. To live with our shadow is to understand how human beings live at a frontier between light and dark and to approach the central difficulty: that there is no possibility of a lighted perfection in this life; that the attempt to create it is often the attempt to be held unaccountable, to be the exception, to be the one who does not have to be present or participate, and therefore does not have to hurt or get hurt. To cast no shadow on others is to vacate the physical consequences of our appearance in the world. Shadow is a beautiful, inverse confirmation of our incarnation.”

This duality of joyfully being your Best Self even when you experience anger, hurt, fear and sadness can be confusing and it certainly is challenging. It is from this that you can grow, heal and change. Being your Best Self is to accept and to embrace all of you – even your shadow.
