Alzheimer’s and other dementia
I received a phone call this week from a woman who asked me, “Can hypnosis help with Alzheimer’s and other dementia?” The woman went on to explain that her husband has been having memory issues in the past few months and she’s being told by his doctors that he has early onset Alzheimer’s.
Her husband just turned 60 and she is only 57. She of course is scared and is researching all options for his care and wellbeing. She was surprised when I shared with her about a study by Simon Duff, PhD and Dan Nightingale, PhD, that indicates that hypnosis has a positive impact on quality of life on a short- and long-term basis.
One of the goals during therapy is to assist the individual to improve areas in their cognitive abilities and Activities of Daily Living that will assist the individual with dementia to enjoy further valued life opportunities. The individual must feel a sense of empowerment and control throughout the entire therapy; a sense of safety and security.
“It’s a miracle!”
It was about 19 years ago that I first provided hypnotherapy to a woman Alzheimer’s. I gave a hypnosis relaxation recording to her son and asked that he play it for her at least once each day. Her son called me two days after her first session and exclaimed, “It’s a miracle!” In the two days that followed that first session, she was calmer, less fearful and slept the best she had in weeks. We met two more times and she continued to show improvement.
Over the years of working with people with Alzheimer’s, I encourage family members and caregivers to participate in the sessions. Dementia impacts them too. Not only do family and caregivers appreciate the stress reduction, the sessions give them tools to assist the person with dementia.
If you have a family member living with Alzheimer’s or other dementia and would like to discuss how hypnosis for dementia can be of benefit, please, give me a call at 206-903-1232 or send me an email.
