Talk about crazy making! Diabetes In Control.com has a June 23, 2009 article called High-Protein, Low-Carb Diet Safe and Effective for Adolescents that reads in part: Obese adolescents lost significantly more weight on a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet than on a standard low-fat diet, according to a randomized study involving 46 adolescents.
At the end of 12 weeks, the teens on the high-protein, low-carbohydrate (HPLC) diet lost an average of 9.0 kg, while those on the low-fat diet lost an average of 5.6 kg, a significant difference, Dr. Nancy F. Krebs of the University of Colorado, Denver, said at a meeting on clinical pediatrics sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco.
Moreover, adolescents in both groups tended to maintain their weight loss over an additional 24 weeks of follow-up. “My hypothesis was that [the HPLC diet] would get them to 12 weeks but they’d rebound,” possibly even ending up heavier than before.
In fact, while adolescents in the HPLC group tended to gain back a little weight within the first 3 months after the end of the diet, they still weighed less than those in the low-fat group. And the HPLC group appeared to maintain that difference for another three months, although those differences did not reach statistical significance.
I am not a medical doctor and I am not a dietitian or nutritionist. But, from years of research and with 10 years experience of weight loss hypnosis with Slender For Life™, I have witnessed the long term illnesses that result from a high-protein, low-carbohydrate (HPLC) diet. Over the years I have had many weight loss clients referred to me by their MD as a result of becoming ill from following a HPLC diet. I have never heard of any ill affects from following a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet. In fact, I repeatedly hear over and over about all the health improvements. So you can see why this article was crazy making for me!
Yes, the data does show that a HPLC diet will result in quicker initial weight loss. Over time, the difference in how fast the weight comes off is insignificant between HPLC and a low fat diet. Most people are unsuccessful sustaining a HPLC diet over time where as a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet is sustainable long term.
