In some of my hypnotherapy sessions for weight loss I mention ghrelin and every once in awhile some one actually asks, “what is ghrelin?” Ghrelin is the hunger hormone. It’s made in the stomach, and it tells the brain when it’s time to eat. Ghrelin doesn’t cause obesity, but scientists think taming it might help us get our scales back in balance. They’re also investigating an opposite hormone – PYY – that makes you feel full.
Japanese scientists discovered ghrelin in 1999. A year later, American researchers found that it drives appetite.
Ghrelin is the first and only yet-described appetite-stimulating hormone. Ghrelin is mainly created in the stomach, where it circulates in the blood, eventually sending a message to the brain to stimulate appetite. Blood concentrations of ghrelin are lowest shortly after consumption of a meal, then rise during the fast just prior to the next meal.
Scientists have found that people who lost weight through dieting actually had elevated levels of ghrelin – not just occasionally, but day and night, whenever it was measured.
The implication is that this is one of the ways in which the body fights against weight loss, which might help explain why millions of yo-yo dieters can’t keep the weight off.
Other effects of ghrelin include stimulating gastric emptying and having a variety of positive effects on cardiovascular function (e.g. increased cardiac output). It is not totally clear whether the cardiovascular effects are a direct effect of ghrelin or represent an indirect effect of ghrelin‘s ability to stimulate growth hormone secretion.
You can use your self-hypnosis and go to the Control Room of your body and ask your subconscious mind to adjust your ghrelin to a level that is most appropriate for you now. You can use hypnosis to regulate your body.
